Being God’s Instrument in Cambodia
God is sovereign, but it’s cool to be the instrument.
Jim and Carolyn were in their 40s when they had a mid-life career change. Not a mid-life crisis, but a voluntary change in response to the goodness of God in their lives and a desire to share it with others.
Jim had traveled the Pacific as a young man in the U.S. Navy. Little did he know that his steps would lead him back to SE Asia, this time with his wife and three kids. They left the comforts of suburban Philadelphia for the rural villages of Cambodia seven years ago. Life was good back in the U.S., but now it’s even better. Their ministry focus is on making disciples and coming alongside Cambodian church leaders and their families.
One profound lesson they’ve learned is the idea of “going” rather than “gathering” as it relates to sharing the gospel. In America, most churches design programs to gather people together. In Cambodia that’s just not always possible. A family may only have one motorbike, so only two members can make it to church or an event. So they’ve learned to go and visit people where they are.
If you’re interested in spiritual things, we’ll sit in your house and talk to you. God is sovereign – but it’s cool to be the instrument, the one that’s there sharing with them. Just the feeling that God’s with you is pretty special. And that can happen here time and time again.â
Listen to more of Jim’s experience of being God’s instrument in Cambodia. Then ask yourself what kinds of changes might be in your future. What might God be calling you to, either related to where you are now or in a new context?
